Hazel Wheeler, Wildlife Biologist

The Eastern Loggerhead Shrike is an endangered species in Canada, with fewer than 50 individuals found breeding in the wild in recent years. Hazel will speak all about the work done to recover this species in Ontario and beyond, and what the future may look like for this fascinating and vicious little songbird.

Hazel Wheeler is a wildlife biologist with an undergraduate degree from Guelph, and a Master’s from Trent, where they studied Chimney Swift foraging patterns using radio-telemetry. For the past 10 years, they have coordinated the Ontario recovery efforts for the endangered Loggerhead Shrike with Wildlife Preservation Canada. They have handled hundreds of shrikes, and have the scars to prove it.
