Program Overview 2023–24

September 16, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

Pond Study

It’s better where it’s wetter, and ponds are the perfect place to explore the often-overlooked underwater world. Rain boots are strongly recommended, and a change of clothes for any intrepid explorers may be handy.

October 14, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

Fascinating Fungi

Fungi are neither plants nor animals – they’re in a kingdom of their own! The fall is one of the best times to find mushrooms, so join us for a foray as we explore the fascinating world of fungi.

November 4, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

All About Birds

While some birds are leaving to head south for the winter, many species brave the cold and stick it out here in Guelph. Join us as we learn what birds call The Arboretum home during the fall and winter. Binoculars will be provided but please bring your own if you have them.

December 2, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

Bird Banding

Now that you know how to identify the birds of The Arboretum from last month’s session, it’s time to get hands-on! Chris Earley will be leading this session and we will learn how ornithologists (bird scientists) study birds using bird banding.

SPECIAL TIME: January 6, 6:00–8:00 pm

Owl Prowl

Whooo is living in The Arboretum forests at night? Join us for a special Young Naturalists evening program where we will be heading out to find owls. Dress warmly and bring flashlights or headlamps since we will be walking around in the dark trying to find our nocturnal friends.

February 19, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

Life in the Snow

Even though plants and animals don’t have coats, mittens and hats to put on, they have evolved their own special adaptations to life in the snow. Bundle up – we’re exploring how animals and plants are able to survive even the coldest of temperatures.

March 9, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

Ecosystem Connections

What is an ecosystem, and why does it matter if everything is connected? Ecosystems are all around us but they can be difficult to identify, so join us as we explore how living things affect each other through the web of ecosystem connections.

April 6, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

Hitchhikers

As people travel around the world, we often bring plants, animals and pathogens with us. But what happens once these hitchhikers arrive in a new space? Join us to learn all about the species that have found new homes in Ontario and what problems they are causing with our ecosystems.

May 11, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

All About Trees

Trees are the giants that live among us, but when was the last time you stopped and really looked at a tree? Join us as we learn how to identify the trees in our neighborhood and discover all the cool adaptations that make trees the quiet giants of our ecosystems.

June 8, 10:00 am–12:00 pm

Incredible Insects

There isn’t a corner of the world that insects don’t inhabit, and The Arboretum is no exception. Join us and find out why insects are the little things that run the world.
