Polar bears are facing a rapidly warming Arctic, driving ecological and evolutionary change. This talk will explore the challenges faced by polar bears and their responses, and demonstrate how advanced genetic tools can be used to monitor polar bear populations, track movement, assess hybridization, and identify adaptive responses. You will learn how discoveries made in the lab are translated into real-world conservation and management strategies in the field, and why this research is so important for the future of polar bears.
Ruth is a Weston Family Fellow in Northern Research at the University of Manitoba and Polar Bears International. She studies the ecology and evolution of polar bears to better understand the impacts of climate change in the Arctic. Using cutting-edge genomic and bioinformatic tools, she investigates how polar bears are adapting and evolving in the face of rapidly warming temperatures and sea ice loss. Her research answers long-standing questions about the ability of mammals to adapt to rapidly changing environments, and informs conservation and management strategies for polar bears and their habitat.
