Join the Nature Guelph Bird Wing group at one of Ontario’s premier spring migration hotspots: Rondeau Provincial Park! The group will meet inside the park at 7:00AM, and will visit a variety of trails and habitats in and around the park, ending mid-afternoon (including a break for lunch). Participation in the afternoon portion of the trip is optional. The exact itinerary for the day will depend on the weather and birding conditions. Participants should expect to walk several kilometers over the course of the day, with some driving to trailheads. Carpooling is encouraged and can be arranged before or during the event. Participants should plan to bring their own lunch, and will need to pay for entry into the park.
Walk is limited to 20 participants. Please register in advance: https://forms.gle/DNVAmw5kTK2hfP6E6
We will be targeting any and all spring migrants, including warblers, vireos, sparrows, flycatchers, thrushes and more.
Rondeau Provincial Park is located on the north shore of Lake Erie near Morpeth, Ontario, south of Highway 401 off of Kent Bridge Rd. Washrooms and water are available throughout the park, but options for food near the park are limited, so participants are encouraged to bring their own food. As the weather in May can be variable, the following is recommended: optics (binoculars and/or camera), layered clothing suitable for both cold and warm weather, rainwear, a hat, comfortable footwear, sunscreen, snacks, and lunch. Rubber boots may be recommended depending on the water level in Lake Erie.
About the walk:
- This event is family-friendly, BUT there will be prolonged periods of waiting/standing around, potentially in cold, windy, and/or wet weather.
- Dress for the weather and prepare for spring walking conditions
- If you need binoculars, consider borrowing them from the Guelph Public Library: https://www.guelphpl.ca/en/index.aspx
- Also consider borrowing a provincial park pass from the Guelph Public Library (thereby saving the park entrance fee): https://www.guelphpl.ca/en/index.aspx
