Join Nature Guelph Bird Wing on Thursday, November 6, 2025 from 7:30-9:00 pm for a presentation from birder and author, Kevin Shackleton. Kevin was born in Windsor, Ontario, but moved to Timmins and then Toronto before returning to Windsor in 1962 where he finished elementary and high school and his Honours BA. His early interest in history led him to Western University for a Masters in History and a Bachelor of Education. His first teaching position was in Pembroke, Ontario. It was while locked out during a labour dispute that he bought his first binoculars and a Peterson field guide. It was another 11 years before he would become a serious bird watcher.
Kevin returned to Western for an MBA in 1980 and graduated in 1982. That led to a 33 year career in financial services with retirement in 2016. He worked in Toronto, Winnipeg and finally Newmarket, Ontario where at his wife’s suggestion he went on his first official bird watching outing and was hooked on the pastime.
He has been married to Linda for over 43 years and has three grown daughters, none of whom are birders, and two granddaughters who he is subtly trying to turn into birders.
He has birded from coast to coast to coast in Canada. He has birded in Arizona, California and Texas in the US. He had also birded in Ecuador, Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina, the Galapagos Islands, Southern Africa and the Southern Ocean.
Kevin self published his birding memoir through Friesen Press in 2024 and he will share with you the motivation and the process that brought the book into being as well as covering his participation in the James Bay Shorebird Survey in 2019.
