Dr. Keriann McGoogan, Primatologist

Join us for a presentation about the women who have dominated the science of primatology. Dr. McGoogan will share her own journey as a primatologist studying wild primates in Belize and Madagascar. She will highlight the stories and legacies of the many women who paved the way, including the late Dr. Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Alison Jolly, and many others.
Dr. Keriann McGoogan is passionate about primates. While studying howler monkeys in Belize, she spent her days in the humid, tropical forests and kayaked gorgeous (but crocodile-filled) rivers. McGoogan also lived in Madagascar for nearly two years studying Critically Endangered lemurs. She has published two books: her memoir Chasing Lemurs: My Journey Into the Heart of Madagascar (Prometheus Books, 2020) and Sisters of the Jungle: The Trailblazing Women Who Shaped the Study of Wild Primates (Douglas & McIntyre, September 2025). When she’s not writing, McGoogan volunteers as a board member for Planet Madagascar, a charity that aims to conserve Madagascar’s unique biodiversity and help the local Malagasy community.
