Join Nature Guelph’s Bird Wing for a presentation from Dave Moore, Senior Waterbird Biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service. Colonial waterbirds are sentinel species in aquatic and marine ecosystems. In the Canadian waters of the Laurentian Great Lakes, colonial waterbirds are represented by 12+ species including gulls, terns, herons, cormorants and pelicans. This talk will examine: (1) the natural history and role of these species in the Great Lakes ecosystem, (2) CWS population monitoring programs, population trends and drivers of change for some of the key species, (3) patterns of migration and migratory connectivity for terns, gulls and egrets, revealed through banding and tracking studies and (4) the main threats faced by these birds and current conservation efforts to address them.
Dave has spent the past 35 years studying the behaviour, population ecology and migration of colonial waterbirds in Ontario. His education included a B.Sc. at the University of Waterloo (1989), M.Sc. at Brock University (1993) and Ph.D. at Simon Fraser University (2002). Since 2005, he has worked as a Waterbird Biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service – Ontario Region (Environment & Climate Change Canada), stationed in Burlington, ON. Dave has been an active member of the Waterbird Society since the early 1990s, serving on Council, as President and as the chair of various committees.
