Partnership Connects New and Diverse Communities to Nature in Guelph
Nature Guelph has entered into a partnership with The Arboretum at University of Guelph in order to support nature programs that will reach new and diverse communities in Guelph. In January 2022, Nature Guelph donated $1,500 to The Arboretum. This donation amount was subsequently matched by other donors, allowing The Arboretum to continue and expand their year-long Nature Throughout the Seasons for New Canadians program, which was developed with Immigrant Services Guelph-Wellington. The program introduces newcomers to Ontario flora and fauna, with the aim of increasing nature appreciation and knowledge among participants. The program also encourages a connection with Guelph greenspaces in The Arboretum and with Nature Guelph as an organization.
Learning about local plants and animals and how to access greenspaces and nature organizations is an important way to help newcomers orient to our community, learn English, form networks, gain a better understanding of Canada – and feel at home. The program features the convening of one learning circle engagement per season, and as a result of our partnership, will now be offered in English, Mandarin and Arabic through simultaneous translation.
