SUMMARY:Talking Nature: Using Science Communication to Share the Love. Wit
 h Kyle Horner
DESCRIPTION:Please join Nature Guelph on Thursday February 9 at 7:30 pm for
a presentation by Environmental Educator Kyle Horner. The event will be h
eld at The Arboretum Centre\, University of Guelph and on Zoom. Everyone i
s welcome!\n\nIf you love nature\, chances are good that you occasionally
find yourself in the role of a science communicator. Maybe you've talked t
o your family about recycling\, argued with a friend about his outdoor cat
\, or shown a stranger that snakes are spectacular\, not scary. A passion
for nature is often paired with a drive to tell others about it\, so these
sorts of conversations come with the territory.\n\nUnfortunately\, some o
f the ways that we intuitively communicate are not as effective as we migh
t hope\, and conversations about challenging topics often result in more f
rustration than success. Changing a person's mind about recycling\, outdoo
r cats\, or snakes is more difficult than it first seems\, and the answers
that may be obvious to you are not always what others want to hear.\n\nSc
ience communication uses psychology\, sociology\, neuroscience\, and even
the arts to find the best ways to convey scientific messages and ideas. Sc
icomm is not just for museums or classrooms - it's something you can use i
n your everyday conversations about the issues you care about. In this tal
k we'll take a look at why science communication is challenging\, and what
you can do to be a more effective voice for the natural world that you lo
ve.\n\nKyle Horner is an environmental educator who has taught about natur
 e at parks\, zoos\, botanical gardens\, nature centres\, outreach programs
\, non-profits\, and the University of Guelph. He has a passion for the sc
ience of science communication\, and particularly loves teaching people ab
out aspects of nature they may not immediately like.\n\nTWO WAYS TO ATTEND
