SUMMARY:Eavesdropping on the missing migrants: Night flight calls and new a
coustic methods for tracking bird migration
DESCRIPTION:Join Nature Guelph Bird Wing on Thursday\, December 4\, 2025 fr
om 7:30-9:00 pm for an on-line meeting (Via Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j
 /88272012494?pwd=m2ycy7YwargDIFLwRIZzHKo6Uxhcxg.1). - Billions of migrator
y birds pass through the Great Lakes every spring and fall\, uttering quie
t flight calls as they move through the night sky. Using novel bioacoustic
recording strategies\, Dan Mennill's research team  at the University of
Windsor studies the vocal behaviour of these nocturnal migrants. In this
talk\, Dan will explain how their microphones allow them to eavesdrop on v
ocal communication of migratory birds and understand the ecological and co
nservation pressures that affect them. Dan will describe a new project tha
t will use a web of microphones across Canada to expand our understanding
of wild migratory birds.\n\nBio - Dan Mennill is a Professor of Ornitholog
y at the University of Windsor. He studies acoustic communication in wild
animals\, especially the songs of birds. He runs the Mennill Sound Analysi
s Laboratory where he and his research team use a field-based approach to
 study animals in Canada\, France\, U.S.A.\, Mexico\, Costa Rica\, and Colo
mbia. Dan has helped pioneer many new playback and recording technologies
for bioacoustic field studies. He has published more than 180 papers in sc
ientific journals and supervised more than 40 graduate students and postdo
ctoral researchers. He is a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society
and a lifetime member of the Society of Canadian Ornithologists and the An
imal Behaviour Society. Dan lives in Lasalle\, Ontario\, with his wife\, p
rofessor and artist Stéphanie Doucet\, and their two children.\n\nTHIS EV
ENT IS FREE BUT DONATIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME.\n\nDonations can be made in
person\, on our website\, through Canada Helps\, or by mailing a cheque to
