SUMMARY:Connecting Canada and Costa Rica Through Our Shared Birds
DESCRIPTION:At Finca Cántaros Environmental Association (fincacantaros.org
 ) in Coto Brus\, Costa Rica\, environmental education and community engage
 ment are at the heart of everything we do. Join us to learn how we use bir
 ds to engage youth to women from across our community in meaningful enviro
 nmental education experiences. Our programs foster awareness and appreciat
 ion for birds\, involve participants in hands-on habitat restoration that 
 benefits both resident and migratory species\, and builds local capacity f
 or the co-production of scientific knowledge through bird banding and Motu
 s Wildlife Tracking\, an international program run by Birds Canada.\nWe’
 ll share success stories from our partnerships with local schools using th
 e BirdSleuth curriculum of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and you’ll dis
 cover how we are creating the spaces for women—a historically underrepre
 sented group in ornithology—to empower themselves and become bird bander
 s and educators\, sharing their knowledge with participants in our Women C
 ommitted to the Earth program.\n\nAnd of course\, we’ll showcase plenty 
 of stunning photos of the beautiful birds that call our backyard home—su
 re to inspire you to visit!\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Lilly Briggs is the Canadia
 n Founder &amp\; Director of Finca Cántaros Environmental Association. Sh
 e did her undergraduate degree at Dalhousie University in environmental st
 udies and international development studies\, and later a PhD in the Depar
 tment of Natural Resources at Cornell University focused on environmental 
 education and the human dimensions of conservation. Throughout her Masters
  of Environmental Studies (from York University)\, PhD and postdoctoral ye
 ars\, she collaborated with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in developing B
 irdSleuth International—an environmental education curriculum focused on
  birds\, conservation and citizen science—for audiences in Central and S
 outh America.\nLilly’s academic background in the social sciences\, comb
 ined with extensive experience working at a variety of nonprofit organizat
 ions\, set her up to become the founder and director of FCEA\, leading her
  team’s work on a variety of projects in collaboration with local\, nati
 onal and international partners. Lilly has been passionate about nature\, 
 birds and environmental education her whole life.\nThis is a VIRTUAL ONLY
